Niepełnosprawność fizyczna ma często negatywny wpływ na popęd płciowy. Jest to częściowo determinowane kulturowo: społecznie akceptowalne ideały piękna zagnieżdżają się w podwzgórzu, czyli części mózgu, która kontroluje popęd płciowy.

Ma to również uzasadnienie biologiczne: każdy osobnik nieświadomie stara się udoskonalić swój gatunek poprzez rozmnażanie, jest to tak zwana selekcja naturalna. Szukamy partnera, który wydaje się najodpowiedniejszy do stworzenia zdrowego i udanego potomstwa. Liczba kobiet decydujących się na przerwanie ciąży po wykryciu wady genetycznej w ostatniej dekadzie wzrosła.
