Ceci n’est pas d’art*

Od transformacji ustrojowej w 1989 r. rola artysty w polskim społeczeństwie bardzo się zmieniła. Wzrosła jego wolność do wyrażania siebie. Artysta ma dziś oficjalnie prawo do buntu przeciwko establishmentowi, mieszczańskiej moralności i kulturze większości. Jednocześnie od artysty wymaga się zajęcia stanowiska wobec sytuacji społeczno-gospodarczej kraju, ustosunkowania się do świata korporacji i politycznych interesów sponsorów.

W ostatnich dekadach społeczna potrzeba jednoczenia się na barykadach zmalała. W rezultacie mało jest podstaw do twórczości zaburzającej spokój, rośnie za to wsparcie dla piękna, rozrywki oraz dla sztuki, która kultywuje świadomość przeszłości.

Since the political changes after 1989, the role of the artist in Polish society did change. His freedom of expression did increase. Officially he now has the right to rebel against the established politics, bourgeois ethics and prevailing culture. On the other hand the artist is challenged to position himself in the socio-economical context and to relate to the commercial agenda of the corporate world and the political agenda of funders.

The population’s need to stand together on the barricades has diminished the last few decades. As a result the basis for disruptive art is small; there is a greater support for beauty, for art as entertainment and for art that cultivates awareness of the past.
